Treatment for Street and Working Animals

The streets of Nepal are home to thousands of stray dogs, their numbers swelling with each passing day as more abandoned pets and street-born pups join their ranks.

While some carry the dreaded rabies virus, most of these creatures are harmless and only resort to biting when provoked. However, the sad reality is that many of these dogs perish without receiving any care, and their population is a direct result of the municipal sanitation practices, or lack thereof. The scavenging of garbage dumps by these animals only leads to a healthier population and the birth of more puppies.

Tragically, society exhibits a blatant disregard for animal life, and those who have the heart to care for these stray animals are often ridiculed and met with resistance. Laws protecting animals do exist, but they are often not enforced, leaving the creatures to fend for themselves. Working animals such as Equines and Yaks fare no better, their owners often lacking the resources and knowledge to provide them with proper care.

These animals are often subjected to harsh conditions and suffer from a range of medical issues due to neglect and inadequate care.

Nepal Smile Savers seeks to address these issues and improve the quality of life for these animals. We help provide a range of medical services to animals, including sterilization programs, vaccinations, and regular treatment to control flea and tick infestations. We also offer critical medical care for animals that are in need of emergency treatment, such as those suffering from injuries, dehydration, or other illnesses. This includes providing basic care such as wound dressing and administering medications, as well as more advanced procedures like surgeries and other medical interventions.

To counter this, Nepal Smile Savers has initiated sterilization and vaccination programs with the aid of local veterinarians and NGOs, to help control the population of stray dogs.
The organization also provides medical care for stray cats and dogs, rehabilitating and releasing them to their original habitat once they have healed. Working animals also receive the care they require to recover from injuries and common health issues such as colic, dehydration, diarrhea, and lameness. Despite their crucial role in the livelihood of poor families in Nepal, these creatures are often neglected and require compassionate support to thrive.
