VACCINATION

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that can be transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of an infected animal.

In Nepal, rabies is a significant public health problem, killing between 100 and 200 animals and more than 100 people each year. This puts immense pressure on local and national governments to address the issue.

Throughout history, governments have commonly turned to the indiscriminate slaughter of stray dogs as a supposed solution to their overpopulation and the spread of rabies. But as time has shown, this approach has failed to bring about any meaningful reduction in the incidence of the disease. Some have even advocated for the total eradication of stray dogs as the only way to control rabies. However, this extreme approach is both cruel and unsustainable, with long-term solutions remaining elusive.

An effective way to control rabies is through mass vaccination programs. Rabies vaccination of dogs has been shown to be one of the most effective strategies for preventing the disease in both humans and animals. Large-scale dog vaccination has been proven to be cost-effective and efficient in reducing the incidence of rabies. While there are concerns regarding adverse vaccine reactions and over-vaccination, current data limit the widespread use of antibody titers to guide revaccination strategies.

Rabies is a serious public health concern in Nepal, with hundreds of animals and humans succumbing to the disease every year.

Nepal Smile Savers recognizes the severity of this issue and understands that prevention is key to controlling the spread of the disease. That is why the organization is dedicated to providing mass vaccination programs to both street dogs and working animals, like equines and yaks, as a means to prevent the spread of rabies.

Through these vaccination programs, Nepal Smile Savers aims to protect not only the animals but also the people who come into contact with them.
By vaccinating street dogs, the organization hopes to reduce the number of cases of rabies in both humans and animals.
